What are access lifts?

As more businesses and even private residences make the transition to improve accessibility for everyone, disabled access lifts are becoming more and more crucial in today’s society to make life easier for those with disabilities. This is a serious problem because there are over 9 million people in the UK who have a handicap that interferes with their daily lives.

In essence, access lifts or platform lifts are a platform that can be raised and lowered using hydraulics or, in certain situations, a traction system. The platform is fastened to a hydraulic ram in a lift that is powered by hydraulics. As hydraulic fluid is injected into the ram by a pump from a reservoir, the lift is moved.

The platform then extends as a result, and the fluid flow is reversed to lower it. This system requires more room to function, but as a result, maintenance is made easier when it comes to access.

Another method of powering access platform lifts is with an enclosed chain drive system. A chain is enclosed inside a tough plastic casing, which guides the chains’ motion and virtually eliminates the danger of slippage.

The platform is raised or lowered by pulling or pushing the chain, which is fastened to a driveshaft that rotates under the power of a motor and gearbox.

Access lifts to improve accessibility

The Equality Act of 2010 superseded the previous Disability Discrimination Act and is generally intended to offer guidelines on inequalities across various societal sectors. In terms of how this affects buildings, many are forced to upgrade or refurbish their lifts in order to be in compliance with the law at the time.

If you provide public services, it is imperative to make sure your lift is accessible to all, which frequently necessitates installing a new system to your current lifts. Floor announcements, auditory and tactile push buttons, lift car handrails, and accessible intercoms are just a few of the elevator amenities that may be incorporated during elevator modifications.

Simply put, severe health and safety requirements must be followed by elevators. Failure to comply can result in a substantial fine at best and a huge accident that could seriously injure people at worst.

Access Lift FAQS

What is a wheelchair accessible lift?

There are three primary categories of wheelchair accessible lifts. The first and most common option among these three is a platform lift. These lifts transfer wheelchair users onto the top platform and vertically up to the height of a nearby stairway.

How long does a platform lift last?

Despite having comparable lifespans, platform lifts’ maintenance costs are significantly lower than those of traditional lifts (20-25 years.)

What are platform lifts used for?

Similar to conventional passenger elevators, platform lifts (vertical lifting platforms) offer access between levels. Platform lifts can be powered by electricity or hydraulics. They typically work on two to three floors.
