Not every home has the space for a traditional lift shaft. A full traction or hydraulic lift installation requires a dedicated shaft, a pit beneath the lowest landing, and in most cases a separate machine room — space that many older homes, converted properties, and compact residential buildings simply do not have. What Is a Shaftless Elevator?

A shaftless home elevator operates without a traditional hoistway. Instead of travelling inside an enclosed shaft, the car moves along a rail system mounted against a wall or a partial enclosure. The drive gear is housed at the top of the lift unit rather than in a separate machine room. The result is a self-contained unit that requires only a hole in the floor above (for through-floor models) and adequate wall space at each level.

These lifts are also commonly called through-the-floor elevators. They can be installed in tight spaces — the corner of a room, the end of a corridor, an understairs area — and do not require significant structural work before installation. For the right building, they are significantly faster and less expensive to install than a conventional residential lift.

How Do Shaftless Elevators Work?

The operating mechanism differs from a conventional lift in two important ways: the control panel uses ‘push and hold’ buttons rather than floor-selection buttons, and the lift can only travel between a single-floor opening. You hold the button for the duration of the travel and release it when you arrive — the lift stops immediately if the button is released at any point, which is a key safety feature.

Because the design is restricted to single-floor movement, shaftless lifts are not suitable for buildings with more than two accessible levels. For buildings requiring access to three or more floors, hydraulic or MRL traction lifts are the appropriate solution.

Advantages of Shaftless Residential Elevators

Space Efficiency

The most immediate benefit. A shaftless lift requires only floor space for the unit and a corresponding opening in the ceiling above — no pit, no shaft enclosure, no machine room. It can be positioned in a corner, against an end wall, or in almost any location where there is sufficient headroom above. For homes where every square foot matters, this is the defining advantage.

Security

The unit incorporates multiple safety features. Pressure sensors on the exterior halt travel if an obstruction is detected. The cab panel gives the user complete control throughout the journey. Cab door interlocks prevent the lift from moving unless all doors are properly closed and secured. Handrails inside the cab provide additional stability during travel.

Cost-Effectiveness

The absence of a shaft structure, pit, and machine room reduces both the construction cost and the installation time. A shaftless lift can typically be installed in a day or two, compared to several weeks for a conventional residential installation. Running costs are also lower, as the compact drive mechanism uses significantly less energy than a full-size residential lift.

How Much Does a Shaftless Elevator Cost?

Costs vary based on the model, the cab size (standard vs. wheelchair-accessible), the number of landings, and any finish preferences. As a general guide, shaftless through-floor lifts start from approximately £8,000–£12,000 for a basic two-landing installation, rising to £15,000–£25,000 for larger, wheelchair-accessible models with premium finishes. This compares favourably to a full residential traction or hydraulic lift, which typically starts from £15,000–£35,000 plus any structural works.
